Professional wrestlers belonged to guilds. In Ostia, a building known as the Caseggiato dei Lottatori was likely the headquarters of this athletes’ association.
A small mosaic flooring the entrance room depicts two wrestlers: it is precisely from this mosaic that the building’s interpretation as the guild’s seat for this category of professional athletes derives.
The mosaic, framed by a braided border, shows a wrestling scene between two figures whose names are inscribed: Artemi and Sacal. One of them is the victor, arms raised, while the other is defeated. The building is located along Via della Fortuna Annonaria.
